2012 Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4
Despite our expertise and experience, even we at In Sixth Gear were momentarily awe-struck when we first heard about the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4. Then we saw it. We expect the latest design to come out of the Sant’ Agata factory to look special - the heritage created by the Countach, Diablo and Murcielago demands it - but this is extraordinary. Even the most jaded enthusiast has to stop and take notice. In the standard yellow (or rather Giallo Evros) livery the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 carries elements of its forerunners style but looks even more purposeful. With our favorite, the Nero Nemesis matt black paint option, it looks like a stealth fighter. The analogy with a fast jet could be continued when you start looking at the figures. Horsepower? Very close to seven hundred. Zero to sixty? A shade under three seconds. We all know Lamborghinis are fast - extremely fast - a car like this is all about performance, so perhaps we shouldn’t be surprised that the Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4, with it’s howling 6.5 liter V12 tops 200 mph. However, even the most accomplished driver has to respect a figure of 217 mph. That’s just awesome.
Yet in some ways the wildest of wild bulls (in case you weren’t aware, all Lamborghinis are named after famous fighting bulls) is also a bit tamer, a bit more civilized. That doesn’t suggest for one minute that this aggressively-styled road-rocket is going to disappoint - not in the slightest. There are few drivers who could honestly claim to be able to able to entirely master this beast. It’s just that it’s a bit smoother than its predecessors. Power is mind-blowing - seemingly endless - but despite revving to over 8,000 it’s actually less hectic. From a standing start it can give you a hammer blow in the back like little this side of an F117 Nighthawk, but there’s no harshness, just more and more acceleration until your bravery reaches its limits - because you’ll seldom find anywhere that the car will. As you might expect, it abounds with race-derived materials and technology, from the light aluminum alloy frame and carbon fiber monocoque to the F1 derived gearbox which seems to shift as quickly as you can think. None of the paddle-lag that this kind of transmission has been criticized for in the past. When reviewing Italian supercars it’s easy to trot out one superlative after another because they are invariably objects of passion and desire. Just occasionally one truly stands out. The Lamborghini Aventador LP700-4 is one of those.
