Is the Acura NSX Hybrid Supercar Worthy? We think so.

acura nsx concept

We've been waiting for the new Acura NSX Concept for a while now - or rather we've been hoping that the company would bring back the supercar that probably did more than any other to make Japanese coupes truly competitive. The original NSX, first produced in 1990, became an automotive legend, so it's no surprise that we're so excited by the Acura NSX Hybrid. There are two questions: Is this Acura NSX Concept the forerunner of an actual road car, and will it have the poise and exhilarating performance of the original? The first part is easy to answer. We're told that a production version of this Acura NSX Hybrid will be in showrooms within three years. It will be put together in the U.S., at the company's facility in Ohio. As for the second part, we'll have to reserve judgment until we can get our hands on one, but the signs are good. Just looking at it makes our palms itch with anticipation. The way the razor-sharp front and edge details actually result in a sleek and smooth whole is a little reminiscent of recent Lamborghinis - yet it exudes technical accomplishment, and as your eyes follow the contours you can just imagine it transforming into some kind of alien spaceship!

Like the first car, the new Acura NSX Hybrid will be based on the ideas of high technology and light weight rather than brute force. If you're a fan of American muscle it's probably not going to appeal to you, but if you like your exotic performance cars packed with the the latest developments and taking into consideration fuel consumption and emissions - while still delivering supercar pace and road-holding - the Acura NSX Concept will certainly get your pulse racing. Like the previous car, the new Acura NSX Hybrid will have a mid-engined 3.5 liter V6 driving the rear wheels, but now that potent powerplant is augmented by an electric motor. There's more modern trickery in the drivetrain with Acura's SH-AWD (Super Handling All Wheel Drive) that can automatically generate negative or positive torque when you're cornering to help keep everything tight and under control. It's another example of the Acura NSX Concept's commitment to engineering efficiency. To some purists it might sound like the car is getting in the way of the actual pleasure of driving, but they ought to be reassured by the manufacturer's President and CEO who assures us the Acura NSX Hybrid is built very much with the spirit and fun of driving as the priority. If the new Acura NSX Concept delivers on that promise and builds on the heritage of the original it will be an exceptional vehicle and will once again take it's place among the desirable elite.
